Widely renowned for being the city which famously launched the Titanic in April 1912, Southampton's rich and varied history is still apparent beyond its modern reputation as a bustling metropolitan city. With large expanses of medieval architecture still intact within the city walls, the many bars, clubs and restaurants which Southampton has to offer reveal only one side of this multicultural city, which is high on the list of the UK's most favoured places to live for 18 to 30 year olds. Given its diversity, when visiting Southampton hotel and bed and breakfast choices can be designed to complement the aspects of the city which appeal to each visitor's individual tastes, from fast-paced nightspots and live music venues to cultural and historical experiences.

As one of the UK's leading cities, Southampton has an excellent reputation for live music events and has been home to a vast number of performances by famous artists. In keeping with the dual spirit of the city, its largest contemporary music venue the Guildhall is also the site of a number of classical orchestral and operatic performances. Smaller venues located throughout the city have also been the site of a number of artists' early performances, with The Joiners coming to develop a prominent reputation in the alternative music scene.

In addition to Southampton's musical associations, a number of museums scattered across the city offer an insight into the city's strong historical reputation as a leading maritime development. Southampton Maritime Museum chronicles the city's ancient and more modern maritime endeavours, while a Titanic museum, detailing the launch and tragic end of the infamous cruise liner and planned to open in 2012, is likely to be one of the city's leading tourist attractions.

As well as displaying an extensive interest in the city's historical and educational features, Southampton's Mayflower Theatre is a hotspot for West End performances, including Les Miserables and Welsh National Opera productions. The city's many art galleries also lend themselves to this modern, cultural side to the city, while arts organisation 'a space' utilise the city's famed medieval halls and dungeons as a juxtaposition with contemporary art work and installations. A designated Arts Quarter has been under construction since early 2009, which hopes to further strengthen Southampton's reputation as a prominent, modern and multicultural city.

Although the city is constantly striving to stay ahead in the race for a culturally diverse Britain, its ties with its past remain as strong as ever. Sea City, an event intended to celebrate Southampton as a major city port, runs from April to September each year and culminates in the city's famous boat race which has been running for over forty years. However, it is not solely in the maritime quarter that Southampton is well established. As a major UK port, the city has links with a number of other major cities via the M27 and can be reached from London by the M3. Together with a strong rail network and intercity buses, Southampton is a bustling and well connected city both in the UK and abroad, with its own airport offering flights to nearby European cities.

In Southampton hotel and other accommodation services are as diverse as the city itself, with options for visitors ranging from the grandest luxury five star buildings to clean and simple lodgings. Many of the city's more secluded hotels open up onto sprawling green lawns and dramatic water features, with swimming pools and health spas included. Almost all offer an array of fitness and relaxation facilities including sauna, jacuzzi and a range of sporting activities available in the hotel's grounds. In addition to the more secluded hotels on offer, Southampton also boasts a number of key hotel facilities based in the heart of the city centre, making them ideal for visitors hoping to get a sense of the city's many restaurants and nightspots. Most hotels are equipped with 24 hour reception areas to ensure a safe and helpful stay, as well as hotel bars and restaurants for quiet nights in. Southampton hotel rooms are decorated to a high standard, ranging in style from dramatic and elegant to modern and sophisticated, much like the city itself.
